Can You Use Walmart Top Coat for Gunpla

My Tools – Different Top Coats

Okay, some other wayyyy overdue posts due to busy schedule and procrastination, but I'chiliad sure alot of y'all would understand. :)

Let's get straight to information technology and then.

When I started building Gundams, I was fascinated by modelers with their own blogs. And that pretty much inspired me to start building Gundams. That is too the early on babyhood influence of my older brother building Gundams and painting them when I was a little brat. Still, new modelers have started doing things I've never seen when I was a kid, not even in the old school display of model/hobby shops. That's top blanket, It makes the model look polished and finished,  the illusion of them looking like they aren't made of plastic or toy-like.

1

I did my research before I bought my first top-coat and overwhelming corporeality of people online were talking about Krylon as a selection for top coating. I did end upwardly getting and now sticking with Mr. Hobby's TopCoat now.  Now to call up of it, maybe I did buy the middle Krylon spray showtime…  Oh well. :P

Well, let'south actually talk about the worst ane outset, then move to the best 1.

Now some more experienced modellers may expect at the iii sprays, and see this ane, and remember 'this isn't the right ane, and won't end well' straight off the bat.

2

This is the Acrylic Crstal Clear (Satin Clear). Usually found in Walmart and some fine art stores. This 1 is by far, the worst out of the iii top coats shown in the first picture. The flip side of the coin is that it is a little bit cheaper out of the 3 equally well.

So hither's why it'due south the cheapest and the worst in my opinion.

3

I've used information technology on this Char'south Gundam. It's one of the older MG'due south I accept, and information technology was cheaper than the normal retail price, so I thought, why non experiment with this, I mean, if it works out bully, then it'll make this MG look that much more bad ass, just if it fails… not too much impairment washed. :|

In the previous photo, it's not that apparent, but if y'all enlarge the epitome and look closer, yous'll meet that the finishing isn't quite flat enough.  In fact, at certain angles information technology is damn straight glossy, non fifty-fifty like a crappy blazon of apartment feel to it, directly up sleeky. Mayhap even glossier than before y'all sprayed it.

Similar in this photo, (Aye I know it's taken from the top of this mail)

2

You lot see how the hands just straight up reflect the low-cal? It's not supposed to do that… O.o

4

But that'due south not actually the worst thing about this spray, information technology'due south the grainy finish information technology gives you. Some may fence that I didn't shake the can enough so the pinnacle glaze isn't even or whatsoever. Merely no homo, I've shook that matter for 2 minutes, counted as well.

5

Don't listen the cracks on the armor, that's simply me being noob dorsum and so or something wrong with the old MG design. Either mode, let's get back to the Krylon top coat.

Information technology'south the most credible on the shield, or larger flat surfaces, which I'll show you throughout this mail for the other sprays as well.

6
That graininess isn't my doing, I didn't sand the shield or do annihilation to information technology, simply cleaned it and sprayed information technology.

7

Here's a fair shot where you guys can see the details without doing much zooming.

Well for comparisons, you guys tin can check out these photos.

8
The Dynames Gundam is applied with the other Krylon Top Glaze. (The Depression Odour Clear Matte Glaze)
As you can see the Dynames looks a little amend, non quite perfect but still a big footstep upward from the Char'southward Gundam.

9

The Custodianship Gundam is sprayed with Mr. Hobby'south TopCoat. There y'all tin see the globe of deviation between those 2 sprays…

Anddddd hither'due south the next i. The 1 used on Dynames Gundam.

10
This 1 is a little unlike from the previous, because this is institute specifically in the fine art/sheet section of Walmart, and more probable to see this is fine art store than the other 1. And I bought this crusade I read how some people made the same mistake equally me, and got the other one, and concluded with poor results. And then this is my second endeavour, to the whole krylon top glaze thing.

11
Do y'all run across that hint of graininess?

12

There's nonetheless a limited shine on it, but I approximate that's nonetheless acceptable. Later on experimenting with the Krylon Satin Crystal Articulate stupid glaze, my expectations for Krylon is very very low… lol

13
Only honestly though, this is okay, it'due south a couple of bucks more expensive than the Krylon Satin Crystal Clear stupid glaze, I think like $x.99 USD..? Effectually there, where the crappy 1 is around 8-9 bucks I think.

(I applied the same coat to the MG Strike Rouge also.)
14
In sure angles information technology looks actually flat, which is peachy, but in certain angles you'll meet those grainy stop due to the low-cal source.

15

16

17

18
Some people may actually adopt this look, given how it'south a fair price and easily attainable without having brand a special trip to the hobby shop.
Equally I said from the beginning, it's non quite perfect. Simply if yous are satisfied with this finishing, and then past all ways this is the topcoat for you.

The terminal peak glaze nosotros'll look at today is the Mr. Hobby's Flat Matt TopCoat, which I've called to stick with for obvious reasons.

19

I was trying to put the Dynames as close to the MG Strike E as possible so you guys tin encounter the difference. lol (Plain the Strike Eastward has been weathered and meridian coated with the Mr. Hobby's Topcoat.)

20

21

22

Not much to say almost the Mr. Hobby 1, as I've used it all this time, no complaints, except it being a little bit pricy. :( Information technology'due south 12- 15 bucks depending on your local hobby store.

And here, maybe the heavy weathering effect was in the fashion of the photo comparison, hither's a less weathered MG Aegis.

23

Andddd you can try to compare it with the Dynames here.

24

25
I call back afterwards these terminal 2 photos, it'south pretty clear to why I like Mr. Hobby'southward TopCoat the best out of the 3.

Then from left to right (Best to worst it should look like this)

26

So yes, I'd rather pay a piffling more, for a better looking finish. Anyways, now that I got this post over with, I can work on painting or larn to paint.. =.=, crusade I suck at painting in general, allow solitary Gunplas and models.

Until next time then. :)
